Flashback Friday: Tiki Disco Edition

Is anyone else having a serious case of nostalgia for summer? Cause I most definitely am now that the coldest month of the year is behind us. I realized this past weekend with my buddy Cyrone (his name be Cyrus but I like to call him Cyrone) that Brooklyn is maybe the best place to be during the summer. So much so that it’s one of the 6 things I just cannot do without. Summer in Brooklyn is simply the best, if for no other reason than Tiki Disco which has become something of a sacred holiday for me. Seriously. At the beginning of the summer, I review the calendar of parties, usually taking place on Sundays (with the exception of one on Saturday which is the must-attend-or-summer-is-not-complete party) and add them to my calendar. From there, all other plans must be made around Tiki. If you’ve been to Tiki and had to wait in that unfortunate line, you know what I’m talking about. If you’ve not experienced Tiki, I hope you get to because it’s simply the shit: Lloydski, Andy Pry and Eli Escobar spinning the best in disco, tall cans of Modelo & spicy Michelada’s, all the sexy people of Brooklyn and about 2/3 of Manhattan, positive attitudes, good vibes, Roberta’s pizza less than a hop away, did I mention amazing music?? So in an attempt to cure this terrible nostalgia, I’m flashing back to Days Like This.

Introducing Nigerian Spotlight: Parker Ighile

Now that I’ve resurrected the blog, I’ve decided to try and focus my writing; take more time to write and maybe improve what little skills I might have. I want to practice writing on different topics and things that matter, to me at least. That’s definitely not to say shall I confuse getting hit on with getting panhandled, it won’t be documented here. That said, I’m starting a new feature called Nigerian Spotlight. I am Nigerian if you didn’t know and it pains me to the core when most people hear “Nigeria,” “Nigerian” or some kind of iteration the first thing that comes to mind is that email they, their mama, and their cousin too received about wiring money to help whomever with whatever problem.

That is not the norm folks! There’s such a wonderful culture, attitude, personality and dare I say it, swag that comes from Nigerians so I’d like to highlight that. My first subject is Parker Ighile. I heard about Parker from my friend Nima (hey, boo!) who reps him. I always support my friends but when it has to do with Nigerians, my ears perk up like a curious puppy. It’s a well known fact among Nigerians (and probably among other ethnicities) that your pre-determined career path involves one or, God-willing, 2 or 3 of the following: law, medicine, economics or engineering. Let’s see… My father is a physician. My mother is a lawyer. My sister is a lawyer. My grandfather was a judge. And my grandmother was a nurse. That’s not to say it’s unheard of for Nigerians to be in a more creative field (like moi) it’s just not that common as outlined by my family. So any time I meet, see, or hear of anyone of Nigerian descent choosing to do their creative thing and not perfect internet scams, I take notice and always support. Recently signed to Nicki Minaj’s yet-to-be-titled record label, it’s nice to see another Nigerian joining the likes of Wale. So, I invite you to check out and watch Parker Ighile’s musical debut (and wish someone sang it to you, ladies): So Beautiful.
